What does a school report on UDISE+?

Three things each year: the school's profile and facilities, its teachers, and its students.[1] Since 2022-23 UDISE+ has collected student-wise data, with more than 60 fields for each student.[2]

Block, district and state officials check what the school enters.[1] The Ministry uses the data for planning and to identify who is eligible for schemes such as Samagra Shiksha, PM POSHAN and national scholarships. The 2025-26 report counts about 14.67 lakh schools and 24.72 crore students.[2]

It's a government reporting system, not a school management system. It holds only the fields the Ministry's data format asks for.[3]

What is a UDISE code?

It's the 11-digit number that identifies a school in UDISE+. It's unique to the school, and the portal says it can't be changed once assigned, apart from a Ministry-only change if the school's district or state changes.[1] The District authority raises the request after the school is recognised, the State reviews it and the Ministry generates the code.[1]

Each student has an 11-digit number too, the PEN. It follows the child between schools.[1]

Is UDISE+ the same as APAAR?

No. UDISE+ is the school's yearly report to the Ministry. An APAAR ID is a permanent 12-digit student ID that a school generates after a parent consents.[4, 5] The school generates it from the same login it uses for the UDISE+ student module, the Student Database Management System (SDMS).[1, 4]

As of October 2026 APAAR is optional for school students. CBSE's circular of 17 September 2026 says filling in the APAAR ID is optional in its Class X and XII candidate lists, and on 20 July 2026 the Supreme Court extended across India a High Court direction to give the consent form a refuse option.[6, 7] Our guide to UDISE+ and APAAR ID for schools has the steps, and the APAAR ID entry explains the ID itself.

FAQ

Questions about UDISE+

Short answers. The sections above have the detail and the sources.

Who enters the data on UDISE+?
The school does. Each onboarded school has a login based on its UDISE code, and block, district and state officials verify what it enters.
Is Aadhaar compulsory for UDISE+?
No. The 2025-26 Data Capture Format makes the Aadhaar number a non-mandatory field and tells schools to enter 9999 9999 9999 for a student who has none.
Does UDISE+ replace a school management system?
No. UDISE+ is where a school reports to the Ministry, and it holds only the fields the Ministry's format asks for. Running admissions, fees and attendance happens in the school's own system.
